Dear Wen-hsien,
Thank you for forwarding this interesting essay from one who had experienced "Olympic maths" but who sees throught its strength and shortcoming. When you organize your "big event" of mathematics contest in the near future, which you once told me about, you may contemplate publishing a booklet on mathematics contest along with the event. In it, this essay would make a good selection to be included. In the past I have also discussed this controversial issue with my old friend Tony Gardiner of UK.
Talking about mathematics contest, yesterday I attended the Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union Primary School Mathematics Contest, which I do annually. I happened to be the one who presented the prize to the champion in non-local teams, which is the famous Chiu Chang Team. Congratulations!
