Dear Mathematical and Puzzle Friends, We invite you to be a part of the second annual Martin Gardner Celebration of Mind event worldwide this coming October 21 ( http://www.g4g-com.org ). The events will be free and open on to all, and will celebrate the life and interests of Martin Gardner, including magic, puzzles, recreational math, and the many other topics of interest to Martin.
A celebration event can be big or small. It can be just three or four people who get together to share Martin's interests, or it can be a bigger event. This year we hope to hold celebrations on all seven continents (We'll even have one in Antarctica this year!).
Would you be interested in hosting an event? If so, just go to http://www.g4g-com.org/host-form/ and fill out our short hosting form. And that's it -- you'll be a Celebration of Mind host! The site has lots of tips and suggestions about how to run your event, and possible things to do. It can be a big event or a small one. It's up to you. Our blog describes all the events from last year's Celebration of Mind. It's at: http://www.g4g-com.org/journal/ or join one of the events already posted on the events map!
The New York Times had the following nice words to say about last year's Celebration (see: http://wordplay.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/numberplay-calculus-for-the-second-grader/):
"Oct. 21, 2010 would have been the great man’s [Martin Gardner's] 96th birthday. This will be the occasion of the worldwide Gathering for Gardner (G4G) Celebration of Mind party. Groups of people will gather all over the world and celebrate what Martin Gardner stood for. Join a celebration close to you, or if there isn’t one, host a celebration yourself. You can sign up to do this at the Web site. The idea is to 'make your own event.' Hosts can organize gatherings of whatever size they are comfortable with, from a cozy contributory dinner to a formal large auditorium spectacular. The idea is to enjoy meeting like-minded people close to you. It’s a great way to carry out a celebration for rationality for a change!"
Would you have any suggestions for other people, educators, or organizations who might be interested in hosting or attending a Celebration?
I hope you can join us.
